Now a day, the profession of nursing seems to be very female
oriented. However this ad seems to be ignoring that fact. They are stating that
even amongst the hardest, most physically demanding jobs that are out there,
nursing is still a job to be proud of. Typically, when people think of nurses
they visualize a woman. And yes, to be fair, there are many women in that line
of work. But there are just as many men, and this advertisement would like to
acknowledge and stand up for that fact.
Risk wise, they are taking a strong stance against the stereotypes that men are unable to be nurses because they are not ‘gentle’ enough, and, furthermore, if a man is a nurse that makes him weak. Instead, it takes the opposite approach and says that not only is it hard to be a nurse but it takes guts. Many people might view this ad and dismiss it as untrue, unrealistic, or just plain out wrong. On the other hand, this advertisement tries to make nursing look desirable by associating nurses with sport players, lawyers, and even surgeons. This also could be a risk because people again might not believe that nursing could ever be that fascinating as a profession, or instead look only at the other jobs displayed here and not pay attention to either the nurses themselves instead of the general message this add is trying to send.
Personally, this add evoked a very positive reaction. To start it is quite startling to see a line-up of tough looking men with the title above their heads reading “ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH”. It grabs your attention, but then when you look further at the ad you notice the nurses standing proudly amongst the many other professionals. That made me personally very happy and I think would send a great message to men everywhere; that not only are men nurses, but they are proud and glad that this is the job they have. It’s a great message to give and in my options one to be supported.
