This ad
reinforces stereotypes of what many years ago we believed a woman should do.
This ad depicts a woman and her child cleaning together. This shows that all
women whether they are young or old they must lean and know how to clean. It then goes one step further to say ‘This
mother’s day get back to the job that really matters’, this seems to be
insinuating that even on a day that mothers are supposed to be celebrated, and
even have a day off it is still considered mandatory, that they must look after
the family and their needs.
Many reactions could be had upon viewing this ad including humiliation, embarrassment, and disgust. First of all, this advertisement is humiliating because it is almost saying that women don’t deserve a day off, and that resting and enjoying life doesn’t matter when you have a house to clean. Secondly, this advertisement is embarrassing for men because it is implying that the men in that household are lazy and incapable of doing the household tasks, so that their wife or mother can rest. For example, in this advertisement even that daughter is stepping up to help her mom, but nowhere do you see a man coming to lend a hand, or doing the task himself. Furthermore, this advertisement makes me disgusted because it is rude towards women, and their role in the household. In other words, it is saying that the role of women to clean is so absolute that they can never have someone else do it, or take a break; the advertiser goes as far to say that this is happening on mother’s day. Overall, my reaction to this advertisement is unpleasant, because it is sexist and embarrassing for men.
This advertisement sends a mostly negative message to females and males. First of all, this sends a negative message to females because it is telling them that even on a day that is set aside each year to celebrate mothers, women are not allowed to take a break but have to keep on working for their family. Furthermore, it seems to tell women that they don’t have any other choice of activity to do, except to clean the house. For instance, on your birthday, you would expect that you would get a break, but, unlike this advertisements views, I would think that mothers should have a break on mother’s day too (you would be offended if people didn’t respect you birthday and likewise I am offended that the advertisement is offending women). Secondly, this advertisement sends a negative message to men, because it is saying to men that they are too lazy to pick up a cloth and clean the house. It almost seems to be saying that men are incapable of simple household tasks. This is offending to men because it is telling them that they are incapable of simple chores. Overall, this advertisement is offending to women because it is telling them that they don’t deserve a break, and to men because it tells them that they are incapable of simple tasks.
